Mullah Fazlullah to be arrested or killed, US assures Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The United States has assured Pakistan that the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) Chief Mullah Fazlullah would either be killed or arrested, the Senate Defence Committee was informed on Monday.

In a meeting of the Senate Defence Committee in Islamabad on Monday, the defence officials further informed the committee that the US also assured Pakistan that in case of an arrest, the TTP top leader would be subsequently handed over to Pakistan.

In November last year, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif went to the United States on a seven-day visit to explore the possibilities of further enhancing mutually beneficial relationship.

The defence officials told the Senate committee said that during his visit to the US, the army chief had also presented vital evidence of the Indian involvement in subversive activities in Pakistan by using Afghan soil to top US intelligence and defence officials.

The Senate defence committee was also informed that the US would also give Pakistan $1 billion in 2015 under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF).

It was briefed that the US would further give Pakistan used defence equipment to meet its security challenges for which the process had already begun.

Earlier this month, the US also declared the TTP Chief Mullah Fazlullah as a global terrorist.

In a press release issued on January 13 by the US State Department, it said that Mullah Fazlullah was designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order (E.O.) 13224, which targets terrorists and those providing support to terrorists or acts of terrorism.

Mullah Fazalullah is wanted in Pakistan as he has claimed responsibilities for numerous terrorist attacks carried out across the country including the December 16 deadly terror attack on the army public school in Peshawar.

A day after the Peshawar attack, the COAS paid a day-long visit to Kabul and sought handover of Mullah Fazalullah.
