KHAR: Two members of pro-government militia were killed while two policemen among several other people were injured by militants in tribal Bajaur district close to the Afghanistan border on late Thursday, officials said on Friday.

The two tribal elders, members of a pro-government tribal militia, were killed when dozen insurgents armed with guns and rockets attacked their homes near Khar, the main town in Bajaur, on late Thursday, local security officials said. Several people, including two policemen, were injured in the deadly attack across the lawless region.

A security official in the area confirmed the attack and the casualties. “Their targets were the tribal elders,” he said.

According to security officials, the attackers managed to flee the scene before the tribal policemen cordoned off the area.

Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it targeted the leaders for leading armed resistance against militant groups in the troubled region.

The leaders had played a major role in setting up the Lashkar (militia) to drive pro-Taliban militants out of restive northwestern Swat valley and its adjacent areas in 2009.
