KARACHI: Residents’ protest against land grabbers turned violent in Karachi on Wednesday.

Police and eyewitnesses said residents of Old Sabzi Mandi area, scores of women among them, took to roads in protest against illegal constructions by the land mafia.

The situation turned violent when mafia supporters opened fire on the infuriated protestors who later ransacked dozens of area shops and torched vehicles.

The riot lasted for more than three hours, turning the area into battle field. A man was injured in the firing.

Police and Rangers resorted to aerial firing and lathi charge to disperse the unruly mob.
