KUNDUZ: A senior election official in northern Afghanistan was killed by unknown gunmen outside his home in Kunduz city on Wednesday morning, an official said.

Amanullah Aman, the head of the Independent Election Commission in Afghanistan’s northern Kunduz province, was killed on Wednesday morning when two unknown gunmen riding on a motorcycle opened fire on his car in front of his house in Kunduz city.

“Aman was shot dead in the morning in front of his house as he was leaving for his office,” Kunduz provincial spokesman Enayatullah Khaliq told a foreign news agency. “Two men on motorcycles opened fire on his car and severely wounded him, he later died in the hospital.”

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Monday, the Afghanistan’s election authorities started receiving the nomination papers of the candidates for the presidential election scheduled on April 5 next year.
