KARACHI, Pakistan: Dozens of suspects have been arrested in Karachi as the Sindh law enforcement agencies (LEAs) continue to conduct search operations across the province to apprehend the suspects ahead of the beginning of Muharram-ul-Haram.

The police said that the Sindh Rangers and police personnel carried out a joint search operation in Manghopir and Pakhtoonabad areas of the Karachi and arrested dozens of the suspects.

The LEAs personnel also seized weapons from the possession of those arrested suspects.

Talking to media, Karachi West Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Azfar Mahesar said that at least 100 suspected persons have been taken into custody over the last three days as part of a crackdown initiated against proscribed organizations in Karachi.

The SSP said that search operations are being conducted in various areas of the provincial capital where intelligence reports have confirmed the presence of terrorists.

The Sindh police have finalized arrangements to maintain law and order during Muharram-ul-Haram under which, misuse of loudspeakers, wall chalking and hate materials will be dealt with iron hand.

It has also been decided that surveillance of majalis and processions would be conducted via cameras.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmaker in the National Assembly Dr Nafeesa Shah presided over a meeting in Sukkur on Monday to review the arrangements made to facilitate the participants of mourning processions and majalis during Muharram-ul-Haram.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Khairpur, Munawar Ali Mithiani, officials of the TMA, North Sindh Urban Services Corporation (NSUSC), Sukkur Electric Power Supply Company (SEPCO), health and other concerned officials.

The participants of the meeting including Ulema belonging to different schools of thought vowed to play their role to promote inter-faith harmony, brotherhood, peace and unity during the month.

A central control room has also been set up in the DC office to monitor and develop liaison among departments during Muharram.
