BEIRUT:  A massive car bomb blast rocked the Syrian capital Damascus on Thursday, killing at least 53 people and injuring over 200 others, media reported.

The explosion took place in a densely-populated area of Mazraa near the headquarters of the ruling Baath party and the Russian embassy and resulted in casualties and injuries among civilians and school students, reports said. Palestinian leader Nayef Hawatma was also among the injured.

According to reports, two mortars were also fired at military headquarters in Damascus.
