MARDAN: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA Imran Mohmand was killed among 28 other people in a suicide blast that hit a funeral prayer in Shergarh area of Mardan on Tuesday, police said.

KPK Information and Health Minister Shaukat Yousafzai said that at least 60 other people were also injured in the blast. The provincial information minister confirmed that Imran Mohmand, a PTI provincial lawmaker from PK-27, was also killed in the blast at the funeral procession.

Imran Mohmand was a worker for the Awami National Party, the former ruling party in the province, before he parted ways to contest the May 11 polls as an independent candidate. He later joined the PTI after winning the PK-27 seat.

Police said that the suicide bomber detonated his explosives during the funeral prayer of Haji Abdullah, a petrol pump owner who was killed by unknown assailants’ firing a day ago. Abdullah was a well-known figure in the area.

The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Maulana Muhammad Qasim was leading the funeral prayer when the loud explosion hit the procession.

The Deputy Inspector-General Police in Mardan, Jaffar Khan, confirmed that the blast was the work of a suicide bomber.

No militant group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Security forces and the rescue team reached the site and cordoned off the area. The injured were shifted to DHQ Hospital and Mardan Medical Complex for treatment.
