8,837 terror suspects arrested across country as part of NAP

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A total of 8,837 suspected terrorists have been arrested across the country as part of the implementation of anti-terror national action plan (NAP) adopted last month.

A report issued on Friday states that all provincial governments as well as Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are fully engaged in implementation of the NAP to combat terrorism and extremism, in pursuance of the directions of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The report says that 1,859 terror suspects have been arrested in Punjab, 1,178 in Sindh, 4,949 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 263 in Balochistan, 455 in Islamabad, five in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, 10 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 118 in the federally administrated tribal areas (FATA).

It says that over 9,000 operation have been conducted in Punjab, 1,178 in Sindh, 2,326 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 30 in Balochistan 322 in Islamabad, 503 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, 16 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 47 in FATA.

Moreover, the report says that 35 terrorist links were identified in Sindh, 103 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and four in Balochistan.

Likewise, a total of 16.3 million cell phone SIMs have been verified all over the country including 4609147 of Mobilink, 6027351 of Telenor, 2161999 of Ufone, 1122439 of Warid and 2375063 of Zong.

The national action plan against terrorism was adopted in the wake of the deadly terror attack that hit an army-run school in Peshawar on December 16, claiming lives of 150 persons mostly children.

The prime minister has asked the provincial governments to implement the NAP in its letter and spirit in order to eradicate the menace of terrorism and extremism from the country.
