TechnologyToday's internet user empowered enough: Chairman PTA

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Dr Syed Ismail Shah has said that today’s Internet user is empowered enough as only by flagging the content on the website, it could be blocked or removed from there.

While talking to the state-run news agency in Islamabad, the Chairman PTA said that community could play an important role regarding unlawful content available on social media.

Ismail Shah requested the users to unlike the pages and content as there is option on face book to unlike/flag it.

Dr Syed Ismail Shah said that team of 25 people has been formed for monitoring and controlling of unlawful content on social media. He said that some web sites are locally blocked and content is removed from that sites and our team is working on it.

The Chairman PTA said that approximately 15 percent content was uploaded on Face book and rest 85 percent was on other web sites. He said that this all campaign could be a propaganda as our rivals seemingly don’t believe in conventional but cyber war.

“In Malaysia, the government prefers that Internet users should be free to view content online,” he said; however, he maintained that Malaysia and Saudi Arabia had developed a good liaison with social media platforms to manage content, if required.

Dr Syed Ismail Shah said that Pakistan was 15th country on the list of countries who had sent requests to block access to content on Face book, adding that these requests were expected to rise in the future.
