Canon Announces a 250 Megapixel Sensor

TechnologyCanon Announces a 250 Megapixel Sensor

Canon has just announced a new 250 megapixel sensor that can fit inside any consumer grade camera and quite frankly has demolished any competition the company had for a little while.

In their latest press release, Canon broke this achievement down in laymen terms by stating: “(The camera has the capability of) distinguishing the lettering on the side of an airplane flying at a distance of approximately 18 km [11 miles] from the shooting location.” Up till now this feat was only accomplished by high end big lenses which were the source of many a wet dreams of amateur photographers.

The sensor is also capable of recording 30 times more than 4K footage albeit at only a measly 4 frames per second. For all of you who are wondering, for our brain to be fooled that a series of pictures is a video, the camera must shoot at more than 40 frames per second. So, the revolutionary Canon sensor won’t really record a video but just 4 photographs snapped in one second, which in itself is still quite a big achievement.

The only sad part is that the company is currently not looking to release a DSLR with these capabilities into the market but is rather focused on specific commercial applications. That being said, this does signify that in a matter of 5 to 6 years at max, we will be staring at Ultra HD footages in the comfort of our homes.
