ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday declared the Supreme Court (Review of Judgments and Orders) Act 2023 null and void.

The reserved judgment was announced by a three-member bench of Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial and and comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Munib.

In its judgement, the Court ruled that the law has no legal value and termed it unconstitutional.

The verdict said that the law was “repugnant to and ultra vires the Constitution” while being beyond the legislative competence of Parliament.

“It is accordingly struck down as null and void and of no legal effect,” it said.

The Apex Court had reserved its verdict on June 19 with an observation that decision on the case would determine the fate of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) review against April 4 verdict of fixing May 14 as the date for holding Punjab Assembly elections.
