Sri Lanka being penalised for eradicating terrorism: Rajapaksa

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka has said that it is being penalised by interested parties for eradicating terrorism in the country.

“Regrettably, the eradication of terrorism in Sri Lanka, has now given rise to a punitive campaign being carried out by interested parties for their own ends. It is unfortunate that this campaign has introduced continuing obstacles,” the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

The president was apparently referring to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution adopted in March, seeking a comprehensive investigation into alleged serious violations and abuses of human rights and related crimes during Sri Lanka’s civil war.

Sri Lanka has been subject to an international probe into alleged human rights violations during the last phase of the war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
