PARIS: US tennis star Serena Williams defeated defending champion Maria Sharapova of Russia on Saturday, 6-4, 6-4, to win her second French Open title.

The 31-year-old Williams recovered from a slow start against Sharapova to win her 16th major championship.

Sharapova went up an early break, but Williams rebounded and dominated the match from there.
