DHAKA: A Bangladesh war crimes tribunal on Wednesday awarded life imprisonment to a senior member of the opposition for his involvement in the killing of hundreds of people during the 1971 war of independence against Pakistan.

The 83-year-old Abdul Alim, belonging to main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was found guilty of nine charges including genocide, murder and persecution of the country’s minority Hindus during the war.

Alim, who was the eighth person to be convicted and sentenced by the tribunal since January, denied the allegations and his lawyer Tajul Islam said they will appeal the verdict.
