South AsiaNepal hands over protest letter to Indian Envoy over territorial issue

KATHMANDU, Nepal: The Nepalese Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali held a meeting with the Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu on Monday, and handed him over a letter of protest over a territorial issue, Nepal’s Republica newspaper reported.

Citing sources, the news outlet stated that the foreign minister told the Indian ambassador that Nepal wants to hold talks with India on the boundary issues without any further delay.

“Foreign Minister Hon. @PradeepgyawaliK conveyed Government of Nepal’s position on boundary issues to Ambassador of India to Nepal H.E. Mr. Vinay Mohan Kwatra at a meeting held at MoFA today and handed over a diplomatic note in this regard,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal tweeted.

Last Friday, India inaugurated a strategic link road connecting Dharchula of the Indian State of Uttarakhand and the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) of China via the Lipulekh Pass, a Nepali territory which lies in the Country’s northwestern frontier with China.

The move by India trigged a strong protest from Nepal; however, the New Delhi government was of the view that the road construction had taken place within the Indian borders.
