ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and the world over will observe the Right to Self-Determination Day on Tuesday with the pledge to continue their liberation struggle till it reaches its ultimate goal.
It was on 5th January in 1949 when the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution supporting the Kashmiris’ right to decide their future by themselves through UN-sponsored plebiscite, Kashmir Media Service reported.
Hurriyet leaders including Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi, Zafar Akbar Butt, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza and Ramzan Khan in their statements in Srinagar, called upon UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to implement the World Body’s resolutions asking for resolving the Kashmir dispute through plebiscite.
The leaders maintained that the lingering Kashmir dispute was a threat to peace and stability in South Asia. They said that presence of hundreds of thousands of Indian troops was the main reason behind the unabated human rights violations in the territory.
The veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in Srinagar said that Indian police had become a terrorizing force in the occupied territory. He condemned the nocturnal raids in Pulwama and Palhallan, ransacking of houses and arrest of youth by the police.
Meanwhile, an anti-India and pro-freedom demonstration was held at press colony in Srinagar, on Monday. The protest was led by Kashmir Tehreek-e-Khwateen Chief Zamruda Habib. The participants while raising pro-freedom slogans demanded implementation of 5th January 1949 resolution on Kashmir.
On the other hand, the authorities had imposed strict restrictions and curfew in different areas of Srinagar to prevent people from staging anti-India protests. Curbs on movement of people and traffic remained enforced in areas falling under Rainawari and Zadibal police stations of Srinagar.
