South AsiaIndian Supreme Court orders to restore normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir

NEW DELHI, India: The Indian Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government to ensure normal life in the valley, which continued to remain under military siege for 42nd consecutive day today.

While hearing a bunch of pleas, the Indian Apex Court also allowed the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to visit Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla and Jammu.

However, the Court barred Ghulam Nabi Azad from indulging in any political activity or holding rallies in the state.

The Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi remarked that if the people in Jammu and Kashmir are unable to approach the High Court then it is a serious issue. He said that he will himself get in touch with the High Court judge and seek clarification over this issue.

Separately, the Indian Supreme Court also issued a notice to the Centre for the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who remains to be under house arrest in Srinagar since August 5 when Article 370 was abrogated by Centre.
