South AsiaIndia denies making request to Donald Trump for Kashmir mediation

NEW DELHI, India: The Indian government has denied making any request to the US President Donald Trump for mediation between Pakistan and India to resolve the Kashmir dispute.

It is worth noting the Donald Trump in his televised remarks from inside the Oval Office at the White House in Washington DC along with Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he is ever ready for mediation between Pakistan and India.

Trump also claimed that the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also asked him two weeks ago for his role as a mediator or arbitrator on Kashmir, causing a huge stir in India wherein the opposition resorted to lambast PM Modi for seeking such assistance from the United States.

However, the Spokesperson of Indian Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar in a tweet said that no such request has been made by the Indian prime minister to the US president.

Raveesh Kumar said that India would want the Kashmir dispute to be resolved only through bilaterally.

We have seen Donald Trump’s remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate, if requested by India & Pakistan, on Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by PM Nagendra Modi to US President. It has been India’s consistent position,” Raveesh Kumar wrote on twitter.

All outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally. Any engagement with Pakistan would require an end to cross border terrorism. The Shimla Agreement & the Lahore Declaration provide the basis to resolve all issues between India & Pakistan bilaterally.”
