South AsiaHundreds of Kashmiris caged in dark cells of Indian jails

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Renowned Indian Supreme Court lawyer, Professor Bhim Singh has said that hundreds of Kashmiri political prisoners are languishing in different Indian jails, which lack all kinds of facilities.

Professor Bhim Singh in a media interview with a Srinagar-based wire agency said that more than 700 political prisoners from Kashmir, Rajouri, Doda, Poonch and other parts of the territory had been languishing in jails all over India, Kashmir Media Service reported.

“You will not believe from past three months no case of any Kashmiri political prisoner was listed anywhere. There is fraud and cheating everywhere and no one is concerned about the confined Kashmiri youth,” Bhim Singh said.

Hurriyet leader, Zamrooda Habib, who herself spent over two years in New Delhi’s Tihar jail, said that they had received reports how Kashmiri prisoners were ill-treated in the cells of Tihar.

“The inmates have informed us that the newly posted D G Prisons is so rude and harsh that he forces Kashmiri inmates to sleep in open without providing them any blanket. It is shocking that even drinking water is not provided to them after the consumption of food,” she said.

The All Parties Hurriyet Conference leader, Javaid Ahmed Mir, said that Kashmiri political prisoners implicated in false cases were present in the cells of Rajasthan, Varanasi, Bengaluru, Gujarat and other jails of India and more than 20 had been sentenced to life imprisonment.

“It is irony as well as shocking that most of these prisoners have been acquitted by different courts of India and yet to appease the Indian agencies, the authorities have been caging them.

The condition of Kashmiri inmates in Jodhpur, Tihar, Vadodara and other jails is miserable and their health has deteriorated to a great extent,” he added.

Some of the Kashmiri detainee including Sheikh Nazir, Mehmood Topiwala, Showkat Ahmed Khan and Muhammad Ayoub Dar who were recently released on parole told newsmen that it was like living in hell in Tihar. “You are safe if you are a non-Kashmir lodged in Tihar. The condition of Kashmiri prisoners in Indian jails is miserable,” they said.
