South AsiaHeatwave in India & Pakistan: People’s survival is at stake

The Climate Change Researcher Chandni Singh has underlined the need to mitigate Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Greenhouse Gas Emissions at the earliest as the prevailing heatwave, especially in parts of India and Pakistan, could cause irreparable human losses in the future.

In a conversation with CBC Radio’s As It Happens program, Chandni Singh, who was also a lead author of the 2022 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, shared her recent experience of facing scorching heat when she visited her family in New Delhi.

Chandni Singh argued that if the world doesn’t drastically reduce its carbon emissions, some regions of India and Pakistan could become too hot for people to live there.

The Climate Scientist said that while India has a role to play, it is really the big historical emitters that also have a very significant role to play around just moving towards a greener and more sustainable trajectory. She said that Countries like the US, UK, China, and Canada have to also be part of the solution of mitigation so that Countries that are really at the front line of Climate Change, like India and Pakistan, don’t continue to see this kind of debilitating heat.

“It’s going to become really bad by 2050, and in many places, cross the limits of survivability by 2100,” she warned.

Chandni Singh stated that we really need to mitigate now and mitigate faster rather than wait for the future, that is really going to lead to a lot of deaths and loss of labour and productivity.

"We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation.
