NationalSoft drinks in schools; Punjab food authority launches crackdown

LAHORE, Pakistan: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has started crackdown against educational institutes by issuing notices to 41 schools selling aerated soft drinks to students.

According to Additional Director General (ADG) PFA Rafia Haider, as many as 131 schools of the Provincial Capital Lahore were checked and majority of the institutes were not offering these drinks.

The teams also inspected 54 schools of Multan, 49 of Rawalpindi, 38 of Faisalabad, 44 of Gujranwala and served warnings to the schools on having soft drinks in their canteens.

It may be noted that the PFA had decided to impose a ban on the sale of all types of soft and energy drinks at educational institutions across Punjab from August 14.

The authority had issued instructions to all the beverage manufacturing companies that they cannot supply ‘cold drinks’ to any educational institution.

The Punjab Food Authority had also barred beverage manufacturer from supplying soft or energy drinks to shopkeepers, canteens and drink corners in 100 metres of educational institutions.
