KARACHI: The federal government on Wednesday appointed Zulfiqar Cheema as new Inspector General of the Sindh Police with immediate effect, however the Sindh government has criticized the appointment.

A notification regarding the Cheema’s appointment as new Inspector General of the Sindh Police has been issued.

The new appointment following a special meeting of the federal cabinet to review law and order situation in troubled Karachi.

Prior to his appointment, Cheema had been serving as the IG of the National Highway and Motorway Police. He also served as the Director General Immigration and Passport and was credited with clearing the backlog of passports within one month.

During his tenure as RPO Gujranwala, Cheema arrested several key criminals and significantly decreased the crime rate.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan People Party (PPP)-led Sindh government has criticized the appointment of Zulfiqar Cheema as Provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Memon was quoted as saying it was imposed on Sindh.

“Nawaz Sharif has started the politics of 1990s. We consider this as the beginning of Governor Rule in the province,” Memon said.
