ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday began its strategy to initiate the legal proceedings through issuance of notices to all electricity bills defaulters, said a spokesman of the Bureau.

In a detailed meeting on Wednesday with Minister for Water and Power, Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar, Chairman NAB Admiral (Retd) Fasih Bokhari decided to take action against electricity bills defaulters (private consumers).

In this regard, terms of reference were decided between NAB and Ministry of Water and Power (MoWP), the spokesman said.

MoWP would refer all cases to the NAB and the Bureau would take action under National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999. MoWP would provide list of electricity bills defaulters by Monday evening, March 11.

In case of non-deposits of the defaulted amount, the defaulters would be prosecuted in accordance with the law. As per initial information provided by the Ministry of Water and Power, action would be taken against 230,000 electricity bills defaulters for the recovery of Rs. 110  Billion (approx), he added.

The spokesman said the operation against defaulters would start simultaneously by all regional bureaus of the NAB and defaulters would be bound to pay defaulted money within 30 days.

If defaulters failed to deposit defaulted amount within 15 days time, their names would be aired/published in the media and action will be taken against them under NAO 1999, he said.
