KARACHI, Pakistan: Karachi in view of constant population influx is expected to generate 16000 tons of garbage daily by 2020, said Roshan A Shaikh, Managing Director, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board here Monday.

Talking to a delegation of investors, comprising both foreign and local, interested in the series of schemes chalked-out by the board, he said the metropolis was currently producing 12000 tons of garbage.

“We are predominantly interested in providing a disease free and clean environment to the citizens,” SSWMB chief said.

“However, are also equally conscious of the fact that the garbage can be turned into an efficient source of income as well as energy generation,” he said.

Roshan Ali Shaikh acknowledging that presently not much of the garbage is being collected on scientific lines from Karachi, he said yet 27% of waste collected is established to produce 500 mega-watts of electricity.

“One can easily decipher the existent potential not only in terms of electricity generation but also in context of other viable recycling options,” he said.

Roshan Ali Shaikh said schemes developed under Sindh Solid Waste Management include door to door garbage collection, construction of garbage transfer stations (GSTs) and energy generation schemes.

Each of these have drawn tremendous attention of the investors, he said mentioning that short term as well as long term schemes are being developed for the purpose.

Shaikh reiterated that provision of a healthy and disease free environment for Karachiites is the top priority of the government and all out measures are being made to ensure that garbage is collected on daily basis so as to avoid back log.

He said 12 companies of international repute have expressed their willingness to invest in the schemes related to solid waste management in the metropolis.
