ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) held a seminar to promote Islamic concept of ‘Ijtihad’ for addressing the contemporary socio-economic issues.
It was part of the series of ‘Khutbat-e-Islamabad’ arranged by the University’s Department of Islamic Thoughts, Culture and History.
In his message on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor AIOU Dr Shahid Siddiqui said that such discourse and discussion to help construct and disseminate knowledge, relating to Islamic thoughts that are relevant to the present’s day society.
Dr Shahid Siddiqui underlined the important role of educational institutions in projecting Islamic teaching and addressing the socio-economic issues, faced by the people.
Eminent Islamic scholar Professor Dr Yousaf Farooqi was the key-note speaker who highlighted various Quranic verses elaborating the concept of Ijtihad and its relevance to the society.
Other who spoke on the occasion included Dean Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies Dr Mohyuddin Hashmi and Dr Baqar Khakwani, Dr Ghulam Yousaf and Dr Muhammad Sajjad.
They spoke about importance of ‘Ijtihad ‘an intellectual endeavour to seek the solutions to day to day matters. Ijtihad has been much emphasized in Islam.
It is a rational and analytical approach, based on the Quran and on the teachings of the Sunnah for interpreting religious matters, they said.
