Selective humanity, compromised morality and Malala Yousafzai

Selective humanity, compromised morality and Malala Yousafzai

DND Report

Selective humanity and compromised morality are two features of those who know the art of success in the Global North and they can get overnight fame, resources, and popularity, one such personality is Malala Yousafzai who was shot and wounded by the Taliban in 2012 and then she was transported to England by the orders of a powerful grid of global North and since then she is a world star.

She got the Nobel prize in 2014—just two years after her transportation to the United Kingdom. She is the youngest Nobel Prize laureate in history. Thousands of articles had been published about her “heroic writing” and hundreds of documentaries had been produced on her “brave life” and all this media management had been done by top media organizations of the Global North.  Alas, no Nobel prize would be granted to lady doctors who laid their lives along with infants in several hospitals in Gaza. Will any Global North media organization glorify lady doctors who died in Gaza while saving infant and female patients? Can anybody suggest any documentary produced by BBC or any other Global North media outlets about them? Nay—nobody would dare to do it because killings of lady doctors and female patients and girls in Gaza hospitals are not unfortunate or heroic incidents for the Global North.

Malala is famous for her selective humanity this selective humanity she has again expressed by showing grave concerns over the arrest of Baloch activist Dr Mahrang Baloch who has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the Jaffar Express hijacking. Alas Malala had never shown her concerns over the killings of bus passengers who were dragged out of buses, their CNICs were checked and those who belong to Punjab were killed and thrown in deserts. Malala also refrained from commenting on the killing of law enforcement agency personnel at the hands of terrorists although the deceased were brothers, husbands, and sons of crying women. She has never condemned terrorism in Balochistan but her comments on the arrest of an accused of terrorism looked shocking. However, an article published in Al-Jazeera in the past can help readers understand what kind of morality and activism Malala believes in. The article titled “How not to show solidarity with the Palestinian people” said:

“Women and children make up 70 percent of deaths from the Israeli army’s relentless bombardment. Pregnant and lactating women face high health and malnutrition risks. Palestinian women have also reported humiliation, torture and sexual violence at the hands of Israeli soldiers in detention. Hundreds of thousands of young women and girls have been deprived of education, as the Israeli army has systematically destroyed schools and universities. The levels of violence and abuse that Palestinian women face are indeed devastating. This should be cause for concern and action for anyone who cares about women’s rights. Among them is Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, who has released several statements, condemning violence against civilians and calling for a ceasefire. She has also donated $300,000 to charities supporting the Palestinian people. But for many, Malala’s solidarity with the Palestinian people rang hollow when it was announced that she is co-producing the musical Suffs with Hillary Clinton. The news caused a lot of outrage, given Clinton’s unwavering support for Israel, rejection of calls for a ceasefire, and historic role in other conflicts in the region. Many brought up past criticisms of Malala that she is a “puppet” of the West and a carrier of the white saviour complex narrative. In a statement following the controversy, she insisted that there ought to be “no confusion” about her support for the people of Gaza and condemned the actions of the Israeli government. By blaming only Israel, she (Malala) overlooked the involvement of the West, especially the United States. Since Israel’s war on Gaza began, the Biden administration had signed a $17bn package of military aid to Israel.  It had vetoed a number of ceasefire resolutions at the UN Security Council and ignored condemnations by UN agencies. It had rejected an International Court of Justice provisional ruling that Israel may be committing genocide in Gaza and criticised the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor for seeking the arrests of Israeli officials, threatening to sanction him. President Joe Biden had even claimed in his speech, “What’s happening is not genocide. With her global influence, Malala can challenge the unconditional support of the US and the West for Israel. She can stand up to the structures of colonial dominance they are maintaining that cause so much suffering in Gaza and the rest of the Global South. Yet she continues to align herself with them. Perhaps remaining silent on complicity is good for her fundraising efforts, but it ultimately hurts her cause. It also reduces her calls and statements on Gaza to performative activism – that is being committed to a cause only in words, but not in deeds.

This piece is good enough to explain that Malala is part of the Western propagation system and she talks about what is suited to the Global North. Here question arises as to why Dr. Mahrang Baloch is important that Western media such as BBC is producing documentaries on her, and almost every important newspaper in the United States and UK is publishing news and articles on her arrest and glorifying ‘her struggle’. Does the Global North need another Malala and this time of Balochistan?

Malala should also comment on what the Baloch Solidarity Committee (BSC) is doing. Its direct support to terrorists of BLA and Majeed Brigade is no more secret. Would Malala release a statement that BLA and Majeed Brigade should not kill innocent people? Will Malala comment on the courage and bravery with which the police have fought the Baloch Solidarity Committee goons? Even people from the organization are now questioning Mehrang Baloch as to why she is running after the bodies of terrorists.

The original narrative of the Baloch Solidarity Committee was the recovery of missing persons, but Mehrang has turned the organization into a support group for the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) terrorists. Many people in the Baloch Solidarity Committee are now openly saying that Mehrang has destroyed the organization’s reputation and has become a proxy for the Baloch Liberation Army.

The most surprising thing is that Sariab, who was always at the forefront of the Baloch Solidarity Committee’s protests and strikes, did not stand with the Baloch Solidarity Committee this time. Local shopkeepers have openly said that they were forced to close their shops by the Baloch Solidarity Committee’s goons. The public has now come to know that the Baloch Solidarity Committee is not working for the rights of the Baloch people, but to advance the agenda of the Baloch Liberation Army.

The reality of the Baloch Solidarity Committee is no longer hidden from anyone. This organization is supporting terrorists in the name of the Baloch people. However, the state has given a clear message that there is no place for terrorists and their facilitators in Pakistan. The real face of the Baloch Solidarity Committee has been exposed and now the public has also rejected this sedition. Will Malala comment on this situation?
