SC orders crackdown on vehicles without fitness certificate

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday issued its verdict in Gujrat van accident case and ordered that the public transport plying without fitness certificates should be removed from the roads.

On May 25, at least 17 children and a teacher were burned to death in Gujrat district of Punjab province when a faulty gas cylinder exploded on the bus taking them to school. The tragedy prompted the apex court to take suo motu notice of the incident.

In its verdict in the case today, the court directed the regional transport authorities to issue fitness certificates to the transporters on merit.

The apex court also ordered Inspector General Punjab to take action against those responsible for Gujrat van accident.

It further said that compensation should be given to the victims of the families.
