Elections 2013Sindh Assembly passes resolution demanding postponement of LB polls

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution demanding postponement of local bodies elections in the province.

The resolution was presented jointly by the Pakistan People’s Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Pakistan Teheek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional.

The resolution stated that free, fair and transparent polls cannot be held under the schedule provided by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The resolution called for ballot papers to be printed by the Printing Corporation of Pakistan (PCP), and not by a private company.

Meanwhile, in a statement the MQM leader Faisal Sabzwari said that his party didn’t want the local bodies elections to be held under the existing unconstitutional system and added that there should not be any law in contravention of the constitution.

Sabzwari said that the election schedule was issued in haste. He said his party has already filed a petition in the Supreme Court praying the apex to declare the Sindh Local Bodies Act-2013 void or order for amendment of some of its articles and a decision was anxiously awaited. Besides, every candidate should be given sufficient time for campaign in the elections, he said.

Earlier, the ECP filed a petition in the Supreme Court of Pakistan seeking to delay local bodies elections across the country by March 2014.
