Shahbaz vows judicial inquiry into Daska incident as lawyers` protest continues

LAHORE, Pakistan: The Punjab Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has said that a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) is investigating the Daska incident at which two lawyers including the president Daska bar association were killed as a result of firing by a police official.

In his address at a high level meeting in Lahore via video link on Tuesday morning, the chief minister said that the provincial government has taken swift action against elements involved in the Daska incident.

Shahbaz Sharif said that the Lahore High Court (LHC) has also been requested to make judicial inquiry of the incident. He said that the death of two lawyers in a clash with police is unfortunate.

On Monday, the President Daska Bar Association Rana Khalid Abbas and advocate Irfan Chauhan were killed and two other lawyers sustained injuries during a clash between protesting lawyers and police in Daska tehsil of Punjab’s Sialkot district.

The incident triggered a strong protest by the members of the legal fraternity across Punjab while the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and other lawyers’ associations gave countrywide strike calls for today.

The sources said that the protests continued across the country on Tuesday by lawyers against the killing of their colleagues in Daska. The lawyers in different cities boycotted court proceedings and held demonstrations and rallies against the Punjab government and police.

In Punjab, lawyers carried out a complete boycott of courts in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Sialkot, Gujranwala, and Sargodha districts while in Sindh province lawyers boycotted court proceedings in Khairpur, Nawabshah and Larkana.
