ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday cancelled the LPG quota agreement between Jamshoro Joint Venture Limited (JJVL) and Sui Southern Gas Pipeline Limited, declaring it null and void.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Jawad S.Khawaja and Justice Gulzar Ahmad issued its verdict while hearing the case in Islamabad on Wednesday.
The bench in its order said that the LPG agreement was nontransparent and declared it null and void.
The apex court also ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate the agreement and submit a report in a month.
Later, talking to the media representatives outside the Supreme Court‚ Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif‚ who had filed petition against the LPG quota deal in 2011‚ termed the apex court’s decision as historic.
The minister said that the LPG quota scandal has caused loss of billions of rupees to the national exchequer. He said that several prominent personalities and politicians of the era of former president Pervez Musharraf were involved in the scam.
