PM Nawaz to address nation today

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will not address the nation on Monday, said a spokesman of the Prime Minister House in Islamabad.

Earlier, it was reported that the prime minister will address the nation today and take into confidence over the prevailing political situation in the country.

The prime minister will also take the nation into confidence over the important agreements recently signed between Pakistan and China, the reports said.

His address comes just days ahead of a planned rally by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on November 30 in Islamabad against the alleged rigging in 2013 general elections and the government’s corruption.

The PTI led by cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan has been staging a sit-in in the federal capital since mid-August, seeking an independent inquiry into electoral rigging.

The PTI Chief also demanded the inclusion of officials from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military intelligence (MI) in the judicial commission probing the election rigging. However, the federal government rejected the demand of security agencies officials’ inclusion in the proposed commission.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister held a meeting with the Director General ISI Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar in Islamabad and was briefed on the prevailing security situation.

During the meeting, the prime minister and the DG ISI held a discussion on issues pertaining to national security.

The ongoing military operation against the militants in the tribal areas as well as withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan also came under discussion during the meeting.
