ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has stressed the need to change the policy on drone attacks as these attacks have proved to be counterproductive.
“These attacks are in violation of Pakistan sovereignty,” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry in a meeting held at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad on Thursday.
The prime minister said that Pakistan which itself is victim of the menace of terrorism is making strides to overcome it and bring peace in the country.
During the meeting, both the leaders held in-depth discussion and reviewed whole gambit of Pak-US relation including regional situation with particular focus on Afghanistan.
Both sides reaffirmed the resolve to work together for peace and stability in Afghanistan and move forward Afghan reconciliation process in this regard.
The PM Nawaz said that “Pakistan wants a stable and peaceful Afghanistan which also in the interest of Pakistan therefore it is extending all possible assistance in this regard.”
Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State appreciated Pakistan’s’ role for peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Kerry said the United States is ready to provide assistance to Pakistan to overcome power crises.
Earlier‚ the US Secretary of State John Kerry held a meeting with Advisor on National Security Sartaj Aziz at the foreign office and discussed bilateral issues besides regional situation with particular reference to Afghanistan.
Kerry arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday night to hold meetings with the top political and military leadership aimed at easing tension over US drone strikes, the war in neighboring Afghanistan, and the fight against Islamic extremism.
It is Kerry’s first visit to Pakistan as Secretary of State although he has visited the country in other capacities before and he is the most senior US official to visit the country since Nawaz Sharif was sworn in as Pakistan’s new prime minister after May elections.
