NA passes resolution for reduction in indirect taxation

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution urging the government to take measures to reduce indirect taxation in the country.

The lawmakers emphasized the need for strengthening the taxation system and increasing tax to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio to achieve self-reliance. They said that the share of direct taxes should be enhanced to give relief to the poor segment of the society and achieve development goals.

The parliamentary secretary for Finance Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan briefed the house about the steps taken by the government to widen the tax net and said that a tax advisory committee has been established to address the issue of non-payment of taxes by affluent class.

Rana Afzal said that the economy has started showing positive indicators endorsed by the international financial institutions. He said that the government has also reduced the burden of loans and returned six percent foreign loans this year.
