RAWALPINDI: Lt General Haroon Aslam on Thursday resigned from his post of Chief of Logistic Staff, a day after Lt Gen Raheel Sharif was appointed as the new Chief of Army Staff, while Lt Gen Rashad Mehmood was appointed as the new Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

Lt Gen Raheel and Lt Gen Rashad were promoted to the rank of four-star general with effect from November 28, after President Mamnoon Hussain, on the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, approved a summary to promote both army officers to the rank of General.

Lt Gen Haroon Aslam, who was the senior most general officer of the Army, tendered his resignation after he was superseded by Lt Gen Raheel and Lt Gen Rashad for the top army positions.

He also didn’t attend the dinner hosted in the Prime Minister’s House late Wednesday night as a token of silent protest.

The sources said that Lt General Haroon Aslam tendered his formal resignation to the Defence Ministry.

Meanwhile, a notification regarding the appointments of Gen Raheel and Gen Rashad was also issued by the General Headquarters, Rawalpindi (GHQ). The notification was sent formation commanders of the Pakistan Army.

Both the officers will assume the charge of their new offices from November 29 (Friday) as the change of command ceremony will be held on Friday at the GHQ.

On the sidelines of Bahrain International Airshow, Commander of Ninth Air Force (US Air Forces Central Command — AFCENT), Lieutenant General Derek France called on Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force. The Air Chief reiterated his resolve to further enhance the existing bilateral cooperation between the two strategic partners. Commander AFCENT appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in promoting regional peace and vowed to enhance cooperation in the fields of joint training, mutual exercises and military to military collaboration. In a separate meeting, Chief of the Air Staff also called on Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force.
