ISLAMABAD: The Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Friday nominated Justice Nasirul Mulk as acting chief election commissioner (CEC) until the appointment of a new chief election commissioner.
Justice Nasirul Mulk will be administered the oath as acting CEC by the Chief justice on Saturday.
The appointment of Justice Nasirul Mulk came after Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, who had also been holding the post of acting CEC since August 17, tendered his resignation today after being named for the new Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Following the resign of Justice Jilani as acting CEC, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had sent a summary to the Supreme Court of Pakistan to appoint new acting chief election commissioner.
On the other hand, the ECP has delayed announcement of local bodies elections in Sindh, saying the provincial government failed to submit the prerequisites by the deadline (Thursday). The commission had plan to announce the schedule for Punjab and Sindh polls today (Friday).
It may be mentioned here that the ECP announced on November 19 that local bodies polls in Sindh would be held on January 18‚ in Punjab on January 30 while in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa‚ cantonment boards and Islamabad in February.
