RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD: General Rashad Mahmood on Thursday assumed his charge of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), a day after he was appointed for the said post.

On Wednesday, Lt Gen Raheel Sharif was appointed as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), while Lt Gen Rashad Mehmood was appointed as the new CJCSC.

Both the senior army officers were promoted to the rank of four-star general with effect from November 28, after President Mamnoon Hussain, on the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, approved a summary to promote both army officers to the rank of General.

A smartly turned out contingent of Pakistan army presented a guard of honor to the new CJCSC upon his arrival in the Joint Headquarter in Rawalpindi on Thursday. He was also introduced to high official of the Headquarter.

Previously, COAS General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani was also holding the charge of acting CJCSC after his predecessor General Khalid Shameem Wynne retired on October 7.

Meanwhile, General Kayani, who is also retiring from his post of COAS on Friday after six years at the helm, held a farewell meeting with the corps commanders at the Army General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi today.

During the 166th Corps Commanders Conference, General Kayani thanked all the corps commanders and principal staff officers for extending their wholehearted professional support during his tenure as COAS.

General Kayani congratulated new CJCSC General Rashad Mahmood and COAS designate General Raheel Sharif for their promotion to the rank of General and selection for the coveted appointments.

Moreover, the outgoing COAS General Kayani also paid separate farewell calls on President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad.

The president and the prime minister lauded the services rendered by General Kayani for defence of the country and strengthening of democracy.
