Corps Commanders meet in GHQ to discuss security situation

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: A Corps Commanders’ Conference is underway at the army’s general headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Thursday to discuss overall security situation in the country.

The meeting is being presided over by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif.

The implementation of the recently adopted 20-point anti-terror national action plan and the establishment of military courts are being discussed in the meeting.

The Corps Commanders are also discussing matters pertaining to professional affairs of the military.

In addition, the progress on the ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb against various militant groups in the North Waziristan tribal areas is also coming under discussion.

Following the Peshawar army public school attack on December 16, the country’s political and military leadership have taken concrete steps to deal with the menace of terrorism.

A national plan of action to curb terrorism and extremism is one of them, and which included establishment of special trial courts headed by military officers and formation of special anti-terrorism force among others.

Moreover, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif last month also lifted a six-year moratorium on the death penalty.
