Rasheed opposes closure of TV channels

ISLAMABAD: The federal minister for information Pervaiz Rasheed said on Thursday that he had resisted the closure of TV channels in the past and he still sticks to this stance as the government firmly believes in freedom of expression.

The minister was talking to media persons in Islamabad on Thursday after inquiring about the health of anchorperson Hamid Mir.

Rasheed said that if any channel tenders apology over its mistake then the matter should not prolonged, keeping in view the issues of national security, terrorism and energy crisis faced by the country today.

The information minister said that the ongoing tug of war amongst different media outlets should come to an end and they should openly accept each other.

In reply to a question, Rasheed said that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) is an independent regulatory authority and he cannot give any dictation to it.
