ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Parliamentary Secretary for National Food Security and Research MNA Rajab Ali Baloch Thursday told the National Assembly that present government has imposed heavy duty on import of milk.

Replying to a question, he said that government could not impose restriction on import of edible items but it can only increase duty on the products.

He said there are around 20 milk processing plants in the country and Food Authorities are checking their standards regularly.

He said that thousands ton of hazard milk was destroyed in Punjab.

He said Pakistan is one of the leading milk producing country in the world having national dairy herd of 12.6 million cattle and 13.7 million buffaloes with an estimated annual gross milk production of 54.328 Million tons during 2015-16.

Around 5% of total milk production out of said annual production is being processed in 20 milk/ dairy processing plants/ units being operated by the private sector which produces approximately 2.72 million tons of processed milk/ dairy products annually, he added.

He told that during 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16, the total revenue earned was 28.37, 1.71 and 1.04 million US $ respectively through the export of dairy products.
