Polling underway in Afghanistan in run-off presidential election

KABUL: The polling was held in Afghanistan on Saturday in the second round of the election to choose a successor to President Hamid Karzai.

The country’s presidential run-off election was held between former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah and ex-World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani after none of the competing candidates secured more than 50 percent of the total number of votes cast during the first round held on April 5, as required under the constitution to win the election.

Over 12 million people were registered to vote at some 6,365 polling stations set up across the country.

The results of the Afghanistan’s presidential run-off election are expected to be announced on July 2.
