Supreme Court rejects petition against Sheikh Rasheed

PoliticsSupreme Court rejects petition against Sheikh Rasheed

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking disqualification of Awami Muslim League (AML) Chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed.

A three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and also comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah announced the judgment in the petition filed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shakil Awan in Islamabad.

The verdict reserved on March 20, 2018 was given by 2-1 as Justice Qazi Faiz Isa wrote a dissenting note in the judgment, recommending that the case be sent to a full Court for further hearings.

Shakil Awan had filed a petition against Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed alleging him of mis-declaration in his nomination papers for the last general elections, and hence does not become eligible to become a member of the Parliament.

Talking to media, the AML Chief Sheikh Rasheed said he had done nothing wrong.

Sheikh Rasheed said he would make a government along with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan.

“We will hang all thieves. I am not the production of dictators,” he said.

In his response over the Supreme Court’s verdict regarding Sheikh Rasheed, the PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah said politicians should have not been expelled from politics on technical grounds.

Rana Sanaullah said disqualification of politicians had negative impacts. He said Sheikh Rasheed should have only been eliminated in the political field.
