PoliticsSubzwari denounces delimitation of Karachi constituencies

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Faisal Subzwari said on Saturday that boundaries of several constituencies in Karachi were redrawn overnight, adding that the measure should be implemented countrywide and not simply centric to one city.

His statement comes a day after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notified delimitation of three constituencies of National Assembly and eight constituencies of Sindh Assembly in Karachi. The city has 20 National Assembly and 42 provincial assembly seats.

MQM had always welcomed every legitimate call made by the election commission, adding that his party would approach the courts when it is time to do so, Subzwari said.

Subzwari alleged that the recent move had political incentives, adding that the election commission should not be turned into a wrestling ground for political parties.

Earlier in the day, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain expressed no confidence in the ECP and described the delimitation of constituencies in Karachi as a conspiracy to divide MQM’s vote bank.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the MQM chief said that an unconstitutional step was taken by the Election Commission a few days before the general elections. It is people’s right to hold protest against the unconstitutional step, he argued.

Altaf Hussain said that delimitation of constituencies in Karachi was a conspiracy to divide MQM’s vote bank.
