PoliticsSC judges to quit if martial law enforced in Pakistan: Chief Justice

LAHORE, Pakistan: The Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday said he and his companions would quit if martial law was enforced in Pakistan.

While addressing a ceremony held in Lahore to mark 80th death anniversary of national poet and philosopher Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the Chief Justice said no one would ever dare to impose martial law in the Country but if anyone did, 17 judges of the Supreme Court wouldn’t let it happen.

Justice Saqib Nisar said neither anyone had the notion of judicial martial law in his mind nor the Constitution allowed it. He said they wouldn’t do anything extra-constitutional.

“We have got this Country after many sacrifices,” he said.

The Chief Justice said the judiciary was fully independent in the Country, adding he was striving for the welfare of the people and if he ever found himself with no power and peoples’ support, he would relinquish his Office.

In addition, he said there would be no compromise on education, and added those parents who were demonstrating negligence in providing education to their children, there were committing a crime. He said the state was the responsible for educating the nation.

Justice Saqib Nisar further said the discriminatory culture needed to be abandoned in the Country.
