ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has described the Pakistan People Party’s (PPP) decision to boycott presidential polls as contrary to democratic principles.

The PPP on Friday announced to boycott the upcoming presidential election after expressing reservations over election schedule and role of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). “We are taking this decision to save the federation. We were left with no other option other than the boycott,” PPP’s senior leader Senator Raza Rabbani told a press conference in Islamabad.

“The PPP should not have boycotted the polls. The opposition party should have demonstrated sportsman spirit,” Sharif said while talking to a delegation of Parliamentarians from Balochistan in Islamabad on Friday.

The prime minister, however, lauded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its decision to go ahead with the elections. He said that the PTI move would strengthen the democratic culture in the country.
