PoliticsPolitical atmosphere in Pakistan not conducive for democracy: Nawaz Sharif

KARACHI, Pakistan: The former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said Pakistan’s history was replete of attacks on democracy, adding the political atmosphere in Pakistan was not conducive for democracy even today.

In his address in Karachi at a Seminar on ‘Democracy and the future of Pakistan’, the former prime minister said democracy was made slave for personal gains in the past.

“Why democracy in Pakistan has become a question mark?” Nawaz Sharif questioned.

Nawaz Sharif said doctrine of necessity was still a Sword of Damocles on democracy. He said the theory of doctrine of necessity was very much liked by their judiciary.

The President of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said most of the former prime ministers of the Country were ousted by the military dictators.

Furthermore, Nawaz Sharif said through Provisional Constitution Order (PCO), a dictator was given permission to amend the Constitution. He said the higher judiciary validated unlawful acts of dictators in the past, adding those judges who defied the military dictators were victimized.

Nawaz Sharif is in Karachi on a two-day visit, and earlier on Thursday after his arrival in the Sindh Capital, he also addressed PML-N workers during which he stressed upon the rule of law and supremacy of Constitution. He also said sanctity of vote must be ensured for better delivery of services to masses.
