ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday announced to introduce the Electronic Voting System to ensure fair and transparent elections in Pakistan and enhance people’s trust in the polling process.

Talking to media in Islamabad after presiding over the Federal Cabinet meeting, the prime minister said that a mechanism will also be brought in for Overseas Pakistanis so that they, too, can participate in the polling to elect their representatives.

The prime minister said that NADRA’s data will be utilized for the Electronic Voting in the Country for which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is being consulted. He said that a bill for these reforms will soon be introduced in the Parliament.

Imran Khan also announced to introduce a Constitutional Amendment for Senate Elections through the show of hands instead of secret balloting to end sale and purchase of votes.

The prime minister said that the Constitutional Amendment is not possible without a two-third majority in the Parliament and for this purpose, the government needs other parties’ support as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) does not have the required number of votes to amend the constitution.

Talking about the PTI’s victory in recent elections in Gilgit-Baltistan, he thanked the people of Gilgit-Baltistan for reposing trust in PTI.

The prime minister also reiterated his resolve to give the Provisional Provincial Status to the region to fulfill the long-desired demand of the people. He said that we will give a detailed plan to fulfill our commitment of granting the Provisional Provincial Status to Gilgit-Baltistan.
