ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Foreign Office on Thursday said Pakistan was witnessing a continuous journey towards consolidation of democracy, having completed two democratically elected tenures and transitioning the next.

In his opening remarks at weekly media briefing in Islamabad, the Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal said they had the successful holding of general elections on July 25, 2018.

The Spokesperson said as a part of the traditional practice of welcoming International Election Observers, the general elections were observed by International Election observers from the Commonwealth and the European Union (EU), who also expressed satisfaction at their conduct.

It is worth mentioning here that as per the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), 52.4 percent of registered voters in the Country used their voting rights in the parliamentary elections on July 25.

No political party succeeded to win a simple majority in the Lower House of the Parliament; however, Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received majority of votes, and in alliance with other parties and after the inclusion of independents, it sealed a comfortable position to form the government in the Centre.

The PTI, apart from forming a government in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province wherein it secured two-third majority in elections 2018, is also likely to form his government in Punjab, the Country’s biggest province by population, with the help of its allies.
