ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 and one month imprisonment to Senator Nehal Hashmi in Contempt of Court Case.

In its verdict announced with two one majority, the three-member Supreme Court Bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Dost Muhammad and Justice Maqbool Baqar also disqualified Nehal Hashmi for five years from holding public office.

Meanwhile, the police arrested Nehal Hashmi from the Courtroom.

Sources in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) told that after the conviction of Nehal Hashmi, the ECP has contacted the Supreme Court to obtain the copy of the verdict.

They said that after receiving the written judgment, Senator Nehal Hashmi will be de-notified.

Senator Nehal Hashmi – belonging to ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) – in a speech in May 2017 had threatened the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) as well as judges of Supreme Court and their families of dire consequences who were hearing the Panama Papers Case involving the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Following his speech, Nawaz Sharif sought Nehal Hashmi’s resignation from Senate seat and also suspended his party membership.

In the meantime, the Supreme Court also took notice of Nehal Hashmi’s fiery speech and summoned him to the Court.

Nehal Hashmi tendered his apology to the Supreme Court judges; however, the Court rejected his apology, and eventually reserved its verdict on January 24, 2018.
