PoliticsNawaz urges unity among political parties for flourishing democracy

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said all political parties would have to get united for flourishing the democracy.

Talking to media after appearing before an accountability court in Islamabad, Nawaz Sharif said any compromise on principles would tantamount to a ‘joke’ with democracy.

“Just pleasing someone else would also be a joke with democracy,” he said.

The former prime minister said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) did not believe in the politics of confrontation with institutions.

Nawaz Sharif said during the last four years, the PML-N government strived to overcome terrorism, and worked hard to end prolonged and unscheduled power load-shedding from the country.

It also brought unprecedented foreign investment under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, increased foreign exchange reserves and restored peace in Karachi, he added.

“Am I being punished for overcoming terrorism, ending load-shedding, bringing CPEC investment, restoring peace in Karachi and making the country a nuclear power?” he questioned.

To a question, Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) top leadership was criticizing him just to please someone else. He said that in the past, a National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was also signed between a dictator and PPP.

Nawaz said media should educate the public about difference of policy approach by a dictatorial regime and a civil government with regard to judiciary.
