LAHORE, Pakistan: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Maryam Nawaz on Monday bagged 220 votes to be elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab following a boycott of the voting process by the PTI backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).
The Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan announced the result of the voting process.
Since the SIC boycotted the election, her rival candidate Rana Aftab Khan received no votes.
At the start of the session, Rana Aftab and other SIC lawmakers had walked out after the Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan did not allow him to speak.
The newly elected Punjab’s first female Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said that her appointment is an honour for every woman in the Country and hoped that the tradition of female leadership would continue in the future as well.
Maryam Nawaz also asserted that she has no feelings or wish for revenge.
Meanwhile, the SIC lawmakers staged a sit-in protest outside the Punjab Assembly after the voting, asserting that the recent elections were massively rigged and even all their members were not allowed to enter the House to participate in the voting process to elect the Chief Minister of Punjab province.
